Short quotes about gifts and giving with checked sources, lines to write on a card or tag for every occasion, popular quotes with the wrong name attached, and gifts with quotes.

Gift quotes and sayings for cards, tags and personalised gifts

Short answer

Best fit
For a card, use a short line with a real source, such as Emerson's 'The only gift is a portion of thyself' or Lowell's 'For the gift without the giver is bare', or write one sentence of your own. For a gift with a quote, choose something you can personalise, like an engraved frame, a star map or a stamp, and keep the engraving short.
Think twice
Skip quote merchandise that prints a famous name on a line that person never said, long quotes on small engraving areas, and quote calendars dated for a year that is almost over.
Budget
A card and a handwritten quote cost almost nothing. Quote gifts run about $10-$30: desk cards, a letter board, an engraved bracelet, a star map print or an engraved photo frame.
Why it works
The best gift messages are short and specific. A real quote, correctly attributed, or one honest sentence of your own, means more than a long poem copied from the internet.
Check the name before you engrave it
Many popular quotes are credited to the wrong person, from Churchill to Maya Angelou. Once a wrong name is engraved, it cannot be fixed. Use the verified list below, or leave the author's name off.

Short quotes about gifts and giving

These lines are all checked against the original text or a sourced reference, and all of them are old enough to be out of copyright.

  • "The only gift is a portion of thyself." Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Gifts" (1844). The full line begins: "Rings and other jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts."
  • "Flowers and fruits are always fit presents." Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Gifts" (1844).
  • "Not what we give, but what we share, / For the gift without the giver is bare." James Russell Lowell, The Vision of Sir Launfal (1848).
  • "Rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind." William Shakespeare, Hamlet.
  • "You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet (1923).
  • "It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding." Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet (1923). Lovely for a surprise gift.
  • "There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward." Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet (1923).
  • "When I give I give myself." Walt Whitman, "Song of Myself".
  • "Goodness is the only investment that never fails." Henry David Thoreau, Walden (1854).
  • "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it for any one else." Charles Dickens, Our Mutual Friend.
  • "Presents, I often say, endear Absents." Charles Lamb, Essays of Elia (1823). A playful line for a gift sent from far away.
  • "Let us give in the way in which we ourselves should like to receive." Seneca, On Benefits, translated by Aubrey Stewart.
  • "The benefit lies in the goodwill of him who gives." Seneca, On Benefits. The original "it's the thought that counts".
  • "In giving, a man receives more than he gives." George MacDonald, Mary Marston (1881).
  • "Give all thou canst; high Heaven rejects the lore / Of nicely calculated less or more." William Wordsworth, Ecclesiastical Sonnets.
  • "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." Albert Einstein, quoted in The New York Times (1932). Unlike most "Einstein" quotes online, this one is genuine.

Quotes about gratitude for thank-you notes

  • "He who receives a benefit with gratitude, repays the first instalment of it." Seneca, On Benefits.
  • "Thanks are the highest form of thought; and gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder." G. K. Chesterton, A Short History of England (1917).
  • "Gratitude is the memory of the heart." Jean Massieu.
  • "Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others." After Cicero. This popular wording is a later paraphrase of his speech Pro Plancio, so credit it as "after Cicero".

Christmas quotes for gift cards

  • "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents." Louisa May Alcott, Little Women (1868), the book's opening line, grumbled by Jo.
  • "I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol (1843).
  • "...of all who give gifts these two were the wisest." O. Henry, "The Gift of the Magi". Beautiful for a couple's card.

Bible verses about gifts

From the King James Version:

  • "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35
  • "God loveth a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7
  • "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above." James 1:17
  • "Freely ye have received, freely give." Matthew 10:8
  • "Give, and it shall be given unto you." Luke 6:38
  • "Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift." 2 Corinthians 9:15, a good Christmas verse

Proverbs and sayings

  • "Never look a gift horse in the mouth." An English proverb: checking a horse's teeth tells you its age and value, so do not pick apart a gift.
  • "He gives twice who gives quickly." A Latin proverb, close to a maxim of Publilius Syrus. Handy for a gift that arrives early, or as a joke for one that does not.
  • "I fear the Greeks, even when they bring gifts." Virgil, Aeneid. Funny on a suspicious-looking white elephant gift.
  • "It's the thought that counts." A common saying with no traceable author. Do not credit it to anyone.

Popular quotes with the wrong name attached

These circulate widely on mugs, prints and bookmarks. Use them without a name, or choose a verified line instead.

QuoteUsually credited toWhat researchers found
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."Winston ChurchillNo evidence he said or wrote it; origin unclear
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."Winston ChurchillAlmost certainly not Churchill; an early version appears in a 1938 Budweiser advert
"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away."Picasso or ShakespeareTraced to author David Viscott (1993)
"People will never forget how you made them feel."Maya AngelouTraced to Carl W. Buehner (1971)
"Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift."Eleanor RooseveltDisputed; usually regarded as anonymous
"Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle."The BuddhaA modern paraphrase, not a saying of the Buddha
"For it is in giving that we receive."St Francis of AssisiFrom a prayer first published in 1912, centuries after Francis
"Kindness in giving creates love."Lao TzuOrigin unknown; found in self-help books, not his writings

What to write on a gift card or tag

If no quote fits, one honest sentence of your own works better. Some lines to borrow or adapt:

Birthday: "Another year of you. The world got lucky again." / "Small gift, big wish: a year as good as you are."

Thank you: "For the help you didn't have to give." / "You did more than you know. This is a small thank-you for a big thing."

Christmas: "Wrapped with more love than tape, and that's a lot of tape." / "Something under the tree, and someone always in my heart."

Diwali: "May your home be full of light and your year full of sweet things."

Graduation: "You did the hard part. Now go do the fun part." / "Diploma: done. Next chapter: yours to write."

A small gift: "Not much, but picked with you in mind." / "A little something because you crossed my mind."

A late gift: "Fashionably late, sincerely meant." / "Late, but the thought was on time."

A special gift for a special person: "For the person who makes ordinary days better." / "I saw this and thought of you, which happens a lot."

Gift tags (two to five words): "Picked just for you." / "Open with a smile." / "Because you're you." / "Love, always."

Gift in a can labels: "Yes, you CAN." / "Canned sunshine: open on a cloudy day." / "100% gratitude. No preservatives."

Gifts with quotes

A quote gift works best when the words are chosen for the person, not printed for everyone. Personalised items let you pick the line; preset designs are safer when you worry about typos.

Engraved keepsakes

A wooden photo frame, a bookmark or a pen engraved with a short line and a date.

Prints

A star map of a special night with a quote as the title, or a hand-lettered quote in a frame.

Jewelry

A cuff or bracelet with a message inside. Preset messages avoid engraving mistakes.

Desk and daily

A perpetual quote calendar, motto cards on a stand or a letter board with a new line each week.

Books

The book a quote comes from, such as The Prophet or A Christmas Carol, with the line marked inside.

DIY

A quote jar with 52 notes, a gift in a can with a pun label, or a handwritten card.

What to write on personalised and engraved gifts

  • Keep it short. A name, a date and two to six words. On small items, longer text means smaller type that is hard to read.
  • Know the space. From most room to least: a frame or plaque, a journal cover, a print title, the back of a bookmark, a pen barrel, the inside of a bracelet or ring, a rubber stamp.
  • Write dates in words. "5 April 2026" or "April 5, 2026". The US writes month first and the UK and India write day first, so "04/05/26" means different dates to different people.
  • Proof names letter by letter. Copy them from a message, not from memory. Custom items are usually not returnable on Amazon.
  • Only engrave an author's name if the quote is verified. A wrong name engraved on a gift cannot be corrected.
  • Private inside, public outside. Put inside jokes on a ring interior or the back of a bookmark, and a line anyone can read on the front.
  • A formula that works: name, one short line, date or place. For example: "Maya, keep going. Class of 2026".

What to skip

Before you buy a quote gift

Worth it when

  • You chose the words for this person, or the preset message fits them.
  • The quote is correctly attributed, or has no name at all.
  • The text is short enough for the space.

Skip it when

  • Merchandise that prints a famous name on a line they never said.
  • Long quotes squeezed onto a ring, bracelet or pen.
  • Calendars dated for a year that is nearly over.

Avoid self-published quote collections with no sources. If you want a book of quotations, Bartlett's traces its entries to their sources.

Bulk packs of keychains or bookmarks are for classrooms and teams, not for one person.

Song lyrics are usually still in copyright. A song title or a few words is safer on a print or engraving.

Common questions

"The only gift is a portion of thyself" (Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1844) or "For the gift without the giver is bare" (James Russell Lowell, 1848). Both are short, out of copyright and correctly attributed.
