Raffle prize ideas for adults, schools, churches and work events: grand prizes, mid-tier picks, cheap fillers and basket themes, plus how to get prizes donated and which rules apply.

Raffle prize ideas that make people buy tickets

Short answer

Best fit
Build the prize table in three tiers: one grand prize people will talk about (a stand mixer, a weekend away, an iPad or a fire pit bundle), a handful of $75-$200 prizes adults want but rarely buy themselves (a Kindle, an instant camera, a smart display, an air fryer, a drill kit), and plenty of $20-$40 fillers and themed baskets. Get as much as you can donated.
Think twice
Skip cash and 50/50 draws unless your state allows them, anything sized or personalized for one person, niche gadgets, last year's tech, kids' toys at adult events, and alcohol until you have checked the rules.
Budget
Work out break-even before you buy anything: a $495 mixer bought at full price needs 50 tickets at $10 before the raffle raises a cent. Keep bought prizes to a small share of a cautious ticket estimate and fill the rest with donations.
Why it works
People buy tickets for a prize they can picture taking home. Prizes that are easy to explain from the stage and useful to almost anyone sell more tickets than clever ones.
Check the rules before you sell a ticket
In most of the US a raffle counts as gambling, and many states only let registered nonprofits run one. In the UK, a raffle sold and drawn at one event needs no licence, but spending limits apply. The rules section below has the details.

How to plan a raffle prize table

Start with the crowd. A school fundraiser, a church dinner, a charity gala, a golf outing and an office holiday party all want different prizes. Picture the typical ticket buyer and ask what they would be pleased to carry home tonight.

Then do the math. Estimate how many tickets you will sell, using last year's numbers if you have them, and stay cautious. Every prize you buy has to be paid for by ticket sales before the raffle raises any money, so bought prizes should be a small share of that estimate. Donated prizes cost nothing, which is why most successful raffles are built on them.

Mix big and small. A single headline prize gets people talking, but a table with many winners keeps people buying, because their odds of taking something home feel real. Most events do best with one grand prize, several mid-tier prizes, and enough small prizes and baskets to fill a table.

Display matters as much as the prize. Put the real item on the table with a bow, a short sign with the prize value, and the donor's name. A photo works for a trip or tickets. If you need ideas for one specific person, such as the honoree at a retirement or teacher party, the AI gift finder for gifts under $50 is quicker than browsing.

Grand prize

One prize worth talking about: a stand mixer, a fire pit bundle, an iPad, a game console, or a donated weekend away.

Mid-tier prizes

Things adults want but rarely buy themselves, around $75-$200: a Kindle, an instant camera, a smart display, an air fryer, a drill kit.

Small prizes and fillers

Drinkware, small speakers, cozy throws, board games and local gift cards in the $15-$40 range. Buy several of the same thing.

Themed baskets

Movie night, grill master, spa night, game night, coffee lover. A basket turns small items into a prize people line up for.

Donated experiences

Restaurant nights, a weekend at a local inn, sports or concert tickets, a photo session, house cleaning or car detailing.

Free perks

Principal for a day, a reserved parking spot, front-row seats at graduation, an extra day off at work (with HR approval).

A gift certificate envelope with a green ribbon, a hotel key card, a folded white robe and a roll of red raffle tickets on a prize table
Donated grand prize
$300-$1,500 value

A donated weekend away

A night or two at a local inn or hotel, a member's vacation home, or donated hotel points. It looks great on the prize table and costs the raffle nothing, which makes it the easiest way to offer a headline prize.

Best for
Galas, church and school fundraisers with $10-$25 tickets, and crowds of adults and couples.
Avoid if
The terms are so restrictive the winner cannot use it. Too many blackout dates or a short expiry turn a great prize into a complaint.

Simple plan

  1. 1Ask earlyContact hotels, inns and members with vacation homes four to eight weeks ahead, through their community or donations contact.
  2. 2Get the terms in writingExpiry date, blackout dates, booking window, number of guests, and what is not included, such as travel.
  3. 3Print the terms on the prize cardTicket buyers should see the conditions before they buy, not after they win.

Prize ideas by event

Schools and PTAs. Families buy tickets for prizes the whole household enjoys: a game console as the grand prize, LEGO sets, an instant camera, family passes to a zoo or water park. Free school perks sell surprisingly well: principal for a day, front-row seats at graduation, a reserved parking spot for a semester, or a pizza lunch with a favorite teacher. Keep alcohol out of school raffles.

Churches and community groups. Kitchen and home prizes do well: a stand mixer, a spa basket, restaurant gift cards, a handmade quilt, a pie a month from a church family. Gift cards to local businesses keep the money in the community.

Charity galas and adult events. Raise the stakes: a weekend away, sports or concert tickets, a fire pit and cornhole bundle, a chef's dinner at home, a golf rangefinder for a golf outing. This is where luxury raffle prizes make sense, provided they are donated.

Work events. Office raffles work best with prizes most coworkers can use: an Echo Show, AirTags, a quality tumbler, a coffee basket, a smart mug. Perks that cost little are popular too: a prime parking spot for a month, a work-from-home Friday, lunch with the CEO, or an extra paid day off. Check with HR first, since some perks have tax implications.

Sports clubs and gyms. A massage gun, a rangefinder, a team-signed jersey, or a basket of recovery gear from a local physio.

Raffle basket ideas

A basket turns several modest items into a prize people want. Use a sturdy basket or a crate the winner will keep, list the contents on a card, and wrap it in clear cellophane so people can see everything.

BasketWhat goes inRough value
Movie nightFire TV Stick, microwave popcorn, boxed candy, a fleece throw, a streaming gift card$100-$160
Grill masterMEATER thermometer, cast-iron skillet, grill tool set, rubs, butcher gift card$150-$200
Spa nightSpa set, bath bombs, a candle, a donated massage or salon voucher$60-$150
Game nightTwo party games such as What Do You Meme and UNO, snacks, a pizza gift card$60-$90
Coffee loverBeans or pods from a local roaster, a tumbler, a cafe gift card$60-$100
Car careA car wash kit, microfiber towels, a book of car wash passes$100-$140
Kids' creativeA large LEGO Classic box, art supplies, a sketchbook$40-$70
BackyardA smokeless fire pit and a cornhole set$350-$400

In the UK, the same idea is usually called a hamper.

How to get raffle prizes donated

  1. Ask six to eight weeks ahead. Many businesses budget donations and say no to last-minute requests.
  2. Send a one-page letter. Name the cause, the date, expected attendance, and a specific ask, such as a $50 gift card or a particular item. US nonprofits should include their tax-exempt number.
  3. Say what the business gets back. A sign at the prize table, a mention in the program, a social media thank-you.
  4. Visit in person, outside busy hours. A local owner says yes more easily face to face than to an email.
  5. Make it easy to say yes. Ask for gift certificates with at least a 12-month expiry, or services that can be booked at off-peak times.
  6. Thank them in writing. In the US, a donor who gives a single item worth $250 or more needs a written acknowledgment from the charity. Describe the item, but the charity does not state its value.

Raffle rules to check first

This is general information, not legal advice. Check with your state attorney general or gaming agency, or in the UK with your local council.

United States. A raffle is a game of chance, and states regulate it as gambling. In most states only qualified nonprofits may run one, and many require registration or a license. A few examples:

  • California lets eligible nonprofits that have been qualified in the state for at least a year run raffles after registering with the Attorney General ($30 a year). At least 90% of gross receipts must go to charitable purposes, raffles cannot be held online, and 50/50 raffles are generally not allowed.
  • Texas limits raffles to qualified nonprofits that have existed for at least three years, does not allow cash prizes, and caps the value of purchased prizes.
  • Washington lets an unlicensed nonprofit raise up to $5,000 a year from public raffles; above that it needs a license.

US taxes. Prizes are taxable income to the winner at fair market value. For prizes awarded in 2026, the organizer files Form W-2G when the prize value minus the ticket price is at least $2,000 and at least 300 times the ticket price. That floor was $600 through 2025. When the prize value minus the ticket price is over $5,000, the organizer withholds 24%. Raffle tickets are not tax-deductible, even when the money goes to charity.

United Kingdom. A raffle sold and drawn at a single event, such as a school fair or a dinner, is an incidental lottery and needs no licence. Tickets must be sold only at the event while it is running, up to £500 of the proceeds can buy prizes and up to £100 can cover costs, donated prizes are unlimited, and nothing can roll over to another event. If you want to sell tickets in advance or online, you need to register a small society lottery with your local council.

Alcohol as a prize. In England and Wales, alcohol can be a prize in an incidental event raffle if it is in a sealed container, and it cannot go to a winner under 18. In the US it depends on the state: California requires a special temporary license, and Washington only allows it at members-only raffles with a permit. When in doubt, offer a restaurant gift card instead.

What to skip

Before you add a prize

Worth it when

  • Most of the people buying tickets would be glad to win it.
  • It is easy to explain in one sentence from the stage.
  • It was donated, or the cost is covered by a cautious ticket estimate.

Skip it when

  • It only suits one kind of person, or needs a size, a name or a monogram.
  • It is niche, dated or seasonal, like last year's earbuds or pumpkin coffee in spring.
  • Its terms are so tight that the winner struggles to use it.

Avoid cash prizes and 50/50 draws unless you have confirmed your state allows them. Gift cards and goods are simpler.

Do not buy expensive prizes your crowd cannot fund. If break-even needs more tickets than your attendees will realistically buy, the raffle loses money, and in places like California or at a UK event raffle it can break the rules too.

Skip anything personalized to a person, such as monogrammed jewelry, or anything that needs a size, such as clothing and shoes. You do not know who will win. Personalize to the event instead, or add a gift receipt.

Keep kids' toys away from adult raffles and alcohol away from school raffles.

Sources for the rules
