How gifting works in Xenoblade Chronicles and the Definitive Edition, the best and worst collectables for each character, plus real-world gift ideas for Xenoblade fans.

Short answer
- Best fit
- In Xenoblade Chronicles, give each character the collectable types they like: parts for Shulk, animals and vegetables for Reyn, vegetables and animals for Fiora, nature and bugs for Dunban, fruit for Sharla, bugs and food for Riki, and flowers for Melia. Love Source (+100 to anyone) is the single best gift, but it comes late.
- Think twice
- Do not give Riki animals, Sharla bugs, Shulk vegetables, or Fiora and Dunban the same things: Dunban dislikes much of what Fiora likes. Disliked gifts lower affinity.
- Budget
- For a real-world gift for a Xenoblade fan: about $50 for an eShop card or a used game, $60-$70 for one of the games, $35-$60 for a soundtrack or art book, and $300 or more for a console or scale figure.
- Why it works
- Gifts are a small, steady affinity top-up. Heart-to-Hearts give far more, so use gifts to push a pair over the next heart level, not as your main strategy.
How gifting works in Xenoblade Chronicles
In Xenoblade Chronicles, a gift goes from one party member to another. It changes the affinity between those two characters, and the size of the change depends only on what the receiver likes. Each collectable has a fixed value for each of the seven party members, from -20 to +30, so the same item can please one character and annoy another. A random gift to a random character averages only about +3 affinity.
You can only give collectables, the items you pick up from blue orbs in the field. They come in eight types: vegetables, fruit, flowers, animals, bugs, nature, parts and strange items.
In the Definitive Edition (Switch and the Switch 2 Edition):
- Press X to open the main menu.
- Choose Affinity Chart, then Affinity Chart: Party.
- Press Y, choose the giver, then the receiver.
- Pick a collectable. Press Y in the item list to filter or sort.
The Definitive Edition records each character's reaction, shown as pink hearts for gifts they liked and black hearts for gifts they disliked, so you learn as you go. Each character's profile lists likes and dislikes as hints, but they are basic and sometimes misleading.
In the original Wii version, you give gifts by selecting a collectable from the inventory, and the game does not record reactions.
Best gifts for each character
The table below shows each character's likes, the collectable types that score best and worst on average, and the strongest single gifts with where to find them. Values come from the Xeno Series Wiki's gift data for all 300 collectables.
| Character | Likes | Best types (average) | Best single gifts (value, area) | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shulk | Blue things, bitter food, dogs, rodents, reptiles, all parts | Parts +11.5, strange +4.7 | Blue Chain +30 (Colony 9), Winding Gear +24 (Bionis' Leg), Digital Filament +24 (Fallen Arm) | Vegetables; Gold Burdock -18 |
| Reyn | Green, white and yellow things, vegetables, juicy food, most animals | Animals +10.6, vegetables +7.1 | Energy Aubergine +28 (Mechonis Field), Meaty Potato +24 (Central Factory), Spicy Cabbage +24 (Bionis' Leg) | Fruit; Doomsday Poppy -18 |
| Fiora | Red things, sweet food, all flowers and animals | Vegetables +9.3, animals +8.2, flowers +6.6 | Blood Worm +26 (Bionis' Interior), Cute Parsnip +20 (Satorl Marsh), Happy Rabbit +18 (Tephra Cave) | Parts; Sour Gooseberry -18 |
| Dunban | White and black things, bugs and nature, blue parts | Nature +9.8, bugs +8.6, parts +5.7 | Prairie Dragonfly +20 (Colony 9), Death Bangle +18 (Bionis' Leg), Blue Gear Shard +18 (Satorl Marsh) | Fruit and things Fiora likes; Ether Plum -20 |
| Sharla | Yellow things, spicy food, all fruit, much of nature | Fruit +10.9, nature +6.9 | Hell Raspberry +30 (Prison Island), Sour Gooseberry +24 (Bionis' Leg), Fire Apple +22 (Valak Mountain) | Bugs; Water Boatman -14 |
| Riki | Green things, all food, bugs, parts that do interesting things | Bugs +10.8, vegetables +9.1, fruit +7.8 | Moth Crawler +30 (Bionis' Leg), Rubber Mantis +24 (Ether Mine), Soft Sea Cucumber +24 (Makna Forest) | Animals; Black Blossom -18 |
| Melia | Purple things, sour food, all flowers, many animals | Flowers +10.0, fruit +7.1, animals +6.8 | Dobercorgi +22 (Colony 6), Amethyst Melon +20 (Sword Valley), Chimera Rabbit +20 (Satorl Marsh) | Vegetables and bugs; Meaty Potato -16 |
Spoiler note: the seventh permanent party member, who joins later in the story, shares Fiora's affinity and gift preferences, so use Fiora's row for them too.
Easy early picks: Blue Chain for Shulk and Prairie Dragonfly for Dunban are both in Colony 9. On Bionis' Leg you can pick up Moth Crawler for Riki, Sour Gooseberry for Sharla and Spicy Cabbage for Reyn. Fiora's Happy Rabbit is in Tephra Cave.
Strange items average about +4.6 for everyone, so they are a reasonable default when you are unsure, but individual values still range from -14 to +24.
Love Source, the best gift in the game
Love Source is a strange collectable worth +100 affinity for any character. You get it by trading a Veritas Glyph, which drops from superbosses, with every trade-bonus skill active. That makes it a late or post-game item. Save it for the pair you most want to max out.
Gifts, Heart-to-Hearts and Skill Links
Affinity between two characters unlocks Heart-to-Hearts, more Skill Link slots, and a better chance of Chain Links in battle. Heart-to-Hearts need both characters in the active party and a minimum affinity; each one adds 200, 300 or 400 affinity, far more than any normal gift. Affinity also rises from Chain Attacks, healing or reviving allies, and side quests.
The practical approach: play normally, do Heart-to-Hearts as they unlock, and use gifts of the receiver's favorite type to push a pair over the next heart level when you are close. The Switch 2 Edition, released in 2026, adds voice acting to the Heart-to-Hearts.
Gifting in the other Xenoblade games
- Future Connected, the Definitive Edition epilogue, has no affinity system, so it has no gifting.
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna have no gifts between characters. Instead, each Driver and Blade has favorite pouch items: a favorite category boosts the item's effect by 20% and a favorite item by 50%. Rex likes drinks and art, Pyra veggies and literature, and Mythra desserts and art.
- Xenoblade Chronicles X raises affinity through missions, dialogue choices, Heart-to-Hearts and Soul Voices, not gifts.
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has no gifting mechanic.
Real gifts for a Xenoblade fan
Buying for someone who loves the series? The games, soundtracks and art books are the safest picks, and licensed merchandise is rarer than you might expect. If you know their console and what they have already played, you can choose with confidence. For broader ideas, the AI gift finder for friends can suggest more from a few details about them.
The games
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Xenoblade 2 and 3, and the 2026 Switch 2 Editions. Check which console they own.

Console upgrades
A Switch 2 Pro Controller, a microSD Express card or a licensed travel case for long play sessions.

What to skip
Before you buy
Worth it when
- It is official: a game, a soundtrack, an art book or a licensed figure.
- It works on the console they own.
- It fits where they are in the series.
Skip it when
- Unlicensed "Monado" props and swords.
- Bootleg figures and generic "Nopon" plush that are really other toys.
- Switch 2 Editions for someone who only has a Switch or Switch Lite.
Unofficial self-published "complete guide" books are not worth it. The free Xeno Series Wiki has more accurate data.
Pyra and Mythra scale figures are often copied. Buy Good Smile or Kotobukiya figures from trusted sellers, and be wary of prices far below the usual.
