Short answer
- Best fit
- Paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th, tin for the 10th, crystal for the 15th, china for the 20th, silver for the 25th, pearl for the 30th, ruby for the 40th, gold for the 50th and diamond for the 60th. The chart below covers every other year. Use the theme as a starting point, then pick something they will use.
- Think twice
- Skip real ivory for the 14th, unlabeled lab-made or treated gemstones, and cheap themed knickknacks bought only to match the material. The theme is a prompt, not a rule.
- Budget
- Paper, cotton and wood gifts start around $20. Leather, crystal and silver usually land between $40 and $150. Solid gold, ruby, sapphire and diamond jewelry starts near $150 for small pieces.
- Why it works
- The best anniversary gifts tie the year's material to something you share: a date, a place, a photo, a habit. That is what makes a cutting board or a star map feel like it could only come from you.

How to read the chart
Traditional or modern? Either is correct. The traditional list is older and built around materials that get more precious as the years add up. The modern list adds practical gifts, such as clocks for the 1st, appliances for the 4th and watches for the 15th, and fills in the years between milestones. Pick whichever gives you the better idea for the person.
Years with no gift listed. The traditional list skips most years after the 15th, so use the modern gift for those years. Neither list names a gift for years 51 to 54 or 56 to 59. A trip, a dinner or a photo project works well there, or borrow the theme of the closest milestone.
Lists don't always agree. Charts online differ, especially in the first 15 years. The table above follows the list compiled by librarians at the Chicago Public Library. The section on other lists below covers the most common differences.
Picks for the big milestones
1st anniversary: paper
Paper is easy to make personal. A star map of the night sky on your wedding date, your vows printed and framed, concert tickets, or a book you both want to read all count. The modern gift is a clock, so a wall clock engraved with your date covers both lists.
5th anniversary: wood
An engraved cutting board, a wooden keepsake box for cards and letters, or a tree to plant in your yard. If you cook together, the board gets used every week.
10th anniversary: tin or aluminum
Tin is a fun one to play with: a vintage tin filled with their favorite candy, a tin anniversary sign, or a camping trip with aluminum camp mugs. The modern list jumps to diamond, which is the 10-year upgrade some couples save for.
15th anniversary: crystal
A crystal decanter, a pair of crystal wine glasses, or a crystal vase with flowers. The modern gift is a watch, which is a good excuse for matching watches.
20th anniversary: china
Replace the wedding china you never registered for, or buy two good hand-thrown mugs for coffee together. The modern list says platinum.
25th anniversary: silver
The silver anniversary is the first big one. Sterling silver jewelry, an engraved silver frame with your wedding photo, or a party with the people who were at the wedding.
30th anniversary: pearl
Pearl earrings or a pearl necklace are the classic choice. For a pearl gift that is not jewelry, think mother-of-pearl cufflinks or a trip to the coast. The modern list says diamond.
35th to 45th: coral, ruby, sapphire
Coral or jade for the 35th, ruby for the 40th and sapphire for the 45th. From the 40th on, the traditional and modern lists name the same milestone gifts. See 40th anniversary gift ideas for ruby gifts couples can share.
50th anniversary: gold
The golden anniversary often turns into a family event. A framed then-and-now photo, a memory book filled by family and friends, or gold jewelry are the classics. Unusual golden anniversary gift ideas has picks that go beyond the obvious.
55th and 60th: emerald and diamond
Emerald for the 55th and diamond for the 60th. By the 60th, most gifts come from children and grandchildren, and a family photo, a recorded message from everyone, or a small diamond pendant all fit. See 60th anniversary gifts for parents.

Custom Star Map
Custom Star Map - Personalized (Multiple Sizes - Unframed Print, Star Constellation Wall Art, Great Gift - Special Occasion, Engagement, Wedding, Birthday, Anniversary)
It is paper, so it fits the 1st anniversary theme, and it shows a moment only the two of you share. It also costs little enough to pair with dinner out.
- Best for
- A 1st anniversary, or any year where you want to mark a specific date and place.
- Personalization
- Use the wedding date and venue, and add a line from your vows or the song from your first dance.
- Avoid if
- You need it this week. Custom prints take time to make and ship, and the frame is usually extra.

Personalized Cotton Throw Blanket
Pure Country Weavers Personalized Woven Photo Blanket - Not Printed - Custom Gift Picture Tapestry Throw 100% Cotton - Made in The USA (72x54)
A woven cotton throw gets used all winter, and the photo makes it a keepsake rather than another blanket.
- Best for
- A 2nd anniversary (cotton) for couples who spend their evenings on the couch.
- Personalization
- Pick a wedding or honeymoon photo with clear faces, and add your names and date along the edge.
- Avoid if
- Your best photos are dark or busy. Weaving softens detail, so small faces in a crowd shot get lost.

Gratitude Journal with Embossed Cover
Leather Journal in Brown 8x6 Refillable Lined Paper Tree of Life Handmade writing Notebook Diary Leather Bound Daily Notepad for women and men Writing pad for Artist Sketch
Leather is the traditional third-year material, and a journal turns the gift into a habit you keep up together.
- Best for
- A 3rd anniversary (leather) for a couple who travels, writes notes or keeps tickets.
- Personalization
- Write the first entry yourself: a memory from each year of your marriage so far.
- Avoid if
- Neither of you writes by hand. A leather wallet or bag will get more use.

Personalized Cutting Board
Personalized Cutting Board, Custom Bamboo Engraved Charcuterie Boards - Best Present for Wedding, Bridal Shower, Engagement, Anniversary, Housewarming, Gift Idea for Couples Bride, Parent, Family
It fits the wood theme, it is cheap enough to pair with a dinner reservation, and it ends up on the counter every day.
- Best for
- A 5th anniversary (wood) for couples who cook, host or love a cheese board.
- Personalization
- Engrave your last name and wedding year, or the recipe of a dish you always make together.
- Avoid if
- They already own a good board, or the theme matters more than the use. Then choose a wooden keepsake box.

Elegant Wine Decanter Set
Le Chateau Large Elegant Crystal Wine Decanter with Built-in Aerator
A decanter looks like an occasion on the table, and the built-in aerator means it gets used for ordinary bottles too.
- Best for
- A 15th anniversary (crystal) for wine drinkers who host friends.
- Personalization
- Add a bottle from the year you married, or from the region where you honeymooned.
- Avoid if
- They rarely drink wine or don't like hand-washing glassware.

Pearl Stud Earrings
PAVOI 14K Gold Plated Freshwater Cultured Pearl Stud Earrings for Women
Small pearl studs go with almost anything and suit people who wear little jewelry.
- Best for
- A 30th anniversary (pearl) on a budget, or a small add-on to a bigger 30th gift.
- Personalization
- Put them in a card with a note about something you have learned from 30 years together.
- Avoid if
- You want an heirloom. For a lasting 30th gift, buy saltwater or higher-grade pearls from a jeweler.
A gift for any year: go back to where it started

Dinner where it all began
Book a table at the restaurant from your first date, a night near your wedding venue, or a weekend where you honeymooned. It works for every anniversary year, including the ones with no gift on either list.
- Best for
- Couples who have everything, milestone years like the 25th or 50th, and anyone who would rather have time together than another object.
- Avoid if
- The place has closed or changed beyond recognition. Then pick a new place in the same spirit and say why on the card.
Simple plan
- 1Find the placeCheck that the restaurant, venue or town is still what you remember before you book.
- 2Bring a piece of the pastTake a wedding photo, the menu from your first date, or the playlist from the reception.
- 3Wrap something smallGive the booking with a gift in the year's material, such as a paper card or a silver frame.
Gifts for someone else's anniversary
Shopping for parents, grandparents or friends? Shared gifts work better than personal ones. A dinner out, a framed photo from their wedding day, or a party with the people who were there will mean more than another object for the house.
For parents and grandparents, start with the 60th anniversary guide or the golden anniversary guide. For a 40th, see 40th anniversary gift ideas. Still stuck? Describe the couple to the AI anniversary gift finder, or try the husband and wife finders if the gift is for your own partner.
Other anniversary lists you may see
The chart follows the U.S. list compiled by the Chicago Public Library. Other lists differ in a few years. A British list published in Pears Cyclopaedia swaps the first two years and changes several others, and greeting-card company Hallmark publishes its own list with a gift for every year.
| Year | Chart above | British list | Hallmark |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Paper | Cotton or paper | Paper |
| 2nd | Cotton | Paper or cotton | Cotton |
| 4th | Linen or silk | Linen or silk | Fruit or flowers |
| 6th | Iron | Sugar | Candy or iron |
| 9th | Pottery or china | Copper | Willow or pottery |
| 14th | Ivory | Not listed | Gold jewelry |
Beyond the 60th, the Chicago list gives diamonds or gold for the 75th and pairs diamond with another stone up to the 95th. British lists name blue sapphire for the 65th, platinum for the 70th and oak for the 80th.
What to skip
Before you buy
Worth it when
- You can say why the gift fits the two of you, not only the year.
- Personalized items have time to be made and shipped before the date.
- Gemstone listings say clearly whether the stone is natural, treated or lab-made.
Skip it when
- Real ivory for the 14th. Choose an ivory-colored keepsake or the modern gift instead.
- Themed knickknacks bought only to match the material.
- Jewelry listings that hide whether a stone is lab-made or treated.
Ivory. Selling African elephant ivory across state lines is banned in the U.S. apart from narrow exceptions, and several states restrict it further. For a 14th anniversary, choose gold jewelry from the modern list or something ivory-colored.
Gemstones. Inexpensive "ruby" and "sapphire" jewelry is often lab-made or heavily treated. That is fine if the listing says so and the price reflects it. The FTC's Jewelry Guides expect sellers to disclose lab-created stones, so skip listings that leave it vague.
